Tutorial Description

Many companies have realized the important role of data in sustaining a company’s competitiveness in the long term. They also elaborate on the concept of “data-driven” in their business models. The realization of this concept requires the implementation of fundamental Data Management capabilities such as metadata management, data lineage, and knowledge graphs.

We demonstrate a 3-phase method to establish a metadata-driven organization by developing these three fundamental metadata-related capabilities. This method is the result of 5 years of practical experience and covers the following topics:

  • Scoping an initiative
    • Data lineage, knowledge graph, and metadata management are complex concepts that have different meanings in various contexts. Every company should develop a metamodel of these capabilities that meets the company’s needs and resources. This will assist in the correct fit-for-purpose scope.
  • Implementing
    • Several approaches and tools to implement metadata-related capabilities exist. A company should make the correct choices to make implementation feasible.
  • Bringing the capabilities into “business-as-usual” operations
    • The results of the implemented metadata-related capabilities can be used for multiple purposes by various stakeholders. However, bringing the outputs of these capabilities into practice faces challenges.

After conducting this session, participants will know how to:

  1. Identify key business drivers for metadata-related initiatives
  2. Involve key sponsors and stakeholders
  3. Define a feasible scope
  4. Prepare functional requirements
  5. Choose the appropriate method of implementation
  6. Choose a proper set of tools
  7. Promote various use cases for the initiatives’ outcomes
