EDW 24: The Jedi Mind Tricks of Data Organization - Role of Data Taxonomy in Data Governance

**This is Subscription-Only Content, It is NOT purchasable as a separate product**

A data taxonomy plays a pivotal role in governing and managing data. It serves as a structured framework for classifying and organizing data assets, ensuring consistency and clarity in data definitions and usage across an organization. A well-defined taxonomy facilitates the implementation of data policies, standards, and stewardship practices. It empowers organizations to understand their data landscape, enforce data quality, and meet regulatory compliance requirements effectively.

In data management, a taxonomy simplifies data discovery, retrieval, and sharing, making it easier for users to find and utilize data assets. It streamlines data integration efforts by aligning disparate data sources according to a common classification system, fostering a unified data ecosystem.

This session gives an overview of how we leverage our data taxonomy to govern and manage data at American Express.

Topics include:
  • Taxonomy basics
  • Taxonomy and its usage as distinguished from data models and glossaries
  • How to use a taxonomy to drive data governance
  • Using a taxonomy to manage disparate data assets
