DGIQ-E24: The Highs and Lows of Data Communities: Navigating Governance in a Collaborative Ecosystem

This presentation will share insights and strategies for effectively managing Data Communities within the FAA's Chief Data Office, focusing on aligning data policies with community activities and enhancing strategic impact. The goal of the speakers is to:

  • Discuss the challenges around data community management including aligning diverse stakeholder interests and fostering active participation and engagement within Data Communities
  • Discuss the evolution of community activities from operational support to a more strategic level, showcasing the use of playbooks and other resources to enable maturity
  • Envision the future of governance through the lens of our communities, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and stakeholder engagement

Meeta Chhabra has been with the FAA for 20 years and is currently a manager within the Chief Data Office.

Krystel Anderson is a data scientist with a strong foundation in security, ethics, and governance. She is passionate about navigating the complexities of collaborative ecosystems, and her work centers on identity, pattern analysis, and the integrity of data communities. She leads with core values of diversity, inclusion, and accountability, firmly believing that "we" not "me" drive transformative change. As a data scientist with a strong foundation in security, ethics, and governance, Krystel is passionate about navigating the complexities of collaborative ecosystems. With experience in the private and federal sectors, she excels in communicating complex ideas and analyzing data and is dedicated to enhancing data accountability and identifying weaknesses in legacy systems. Her goal is to drive innovation while upholding the highest standards of security and integrity within data communities.

Speaker: Nathan Wilson

Nathan Wilson is the Data Governance Policy and Standards Lead for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Over the last 10 years, Nathan's worked to implement data governance across multiple federal agencies both as a contractor and federal employee. Prior to working for the federal government, Nathan was an otologist for the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation supporting their clinical and translational medical research. 

When not inflicting data governance upon those around him, Nathan is traveling and competing in beard and mustache competitions. He is the 2023 Dali National Mustache champion, the 2017 Dali Mustache World champion, and is currently ranked 3rd in the world for Dali mustache.
