
AI, in particular machine learning, has been positioned as an important element in contributing to as well as providing decisions in a multitude of industries. The use of machine learning in delivering decisions is based on the data that is used to train the machine learning algorithms. It is imperative that when machine learning applications are being considered the data being used to train the machine learning algorithms is without bias, and the data is ethically used.
This panel focuses on the ethical use of data in developing machine learning algorithms. We will include the examination of how data ethics is being applied in the development of an AI solution, examining incorporating data ethics principles, selecting ethical data for AI applications, and data governance.

Katrina Ingram is the Founder and CEO of Ethically Aligned AI, a company focused on helping organizations to drive better outcomes in the design, development and deployment of AI systems. A seasoned executive, Katrina has over two decades of experience running both not for profit and corporate organizations in the technology and media sectors as well as experience in the public sector. She is a member of DAMA (data management professionals) and volunteers with several AI ethics organizations. She was named to the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics list. Katrina holds an undergrad in business administration from Simon Fraser University, a master of arts in communications and technology from the University of Alberta and is an IAPP certified information privacy professional (CIPP/C). She is a member of the Calgary Police Services Technology Ethics Committee and recently served as the City of Edmonton's Data Ethics Advisor. Katrina is an instructor with DATAVERSITY and also a monthly column called “Ask a data ethicist”.

Sunil Soares is the Founder and CEO of YDC, which focuses on AI Governance. Prior to this role, Sunil was the Founder and CEO of Information Asset, a data management firm, which he sold to private equity.
Sunil is the author of 11 books on data management, including AI Governance, The IBM Data Governance Unified Process, Selling Information Governance to the Business, Big Data Governance, Data Governance Tools, Data Governance Guide for BCBS 239 and DFAST Compliance, and The Chief Data Officer Handbook for Data Governance.
In the past, Sunil also worked as an auditor at PwC and as a management consultant at Booz and Company. Sunil is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and has an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
