Governance is typically a function of controls. We tell people what they can and can’t do, introduce barriers, set standards, measure adherence to various policies, and keep data safe. We are often seen as outsiders to avoid whenever possible, as we add more and more work to their backlog. Changing the paradigm to be a “Data Enabler” makes Governance an asset to a company that is sought-after instead of avoided.

How did we achieve this?

• Thinking of Data Enablement through an integrated self-service lens covering (1) Discovery, (2) Education, (3) Trust/Quality, (4) Access, (5) Approval, and (6) Core Governance Functions
• Providing a one-stop-shop experience through a well-populated and governed Data Catalog that brings relevant materials together (data artifacts, metadata, metrics, quality, approvals, policies, etc.)
• Partnering with Executive Leadership, Data Producers, and Data Consumers on solutions that save time and add value to their daily routines
• Simplification, automation, and re-use of capabilities (removing any non-effective activities)
• Establishing shared KPIs that allowed Data Producers and Consumers to share in the success while providing accountability
• Establishing KPIs that measure the value of the Data Enablement & Governance function to senior leadership
